MOT Pre-Test Checklist: Simple Steps to Avoid Failure

The annual MOT test is a legal requirement in the UK to ensure your vehicle meets safety and environmental standards. According to DVSA statistics, nearly 40% of all MOT failures are caused by simple faults—such as blown light bulbs, empty screenwash, or worn wiper blades—that could have been spotted and resolved in 10 minutes before the test. Here is our expert pre-MOT checklist to help you pass first time.

1. Test All Lights and Indicators

Lighting faults are the most common cause of MOT failures. Walk around your vehicle and check all headlights (both dipped and high beam), front and rear fog lights, indicators, hazard lights, brake lights, and the rear registration plate light. Have a friend press the brake pedal while you check the rear lights, or park near a reflective window. Replacing a blown bulb is quick and inexpensive.

2. Check Windscreen Wipers & Washers

Your wipers must clear the windscreen effectively without leaving streaks. Check the rubber blades for splits or tears. Also, top up your screenwash reservoir; an empty wash bottle is an instant MOT failure. Check the windscreen for chips or cracks—any damage larger than 10mm in the driver's direct line of vision or 40mm elsewhere on the swept area will fail.

3. Inspect Tyre Tread Depth and Condition

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. You can check this using a 20p coin; if the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread, your tyre is likely legal border-line. Also, check the sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or cracks, which are safety hazards and instant failures.

4. Verify Seatbelts and Controls

Pull all seatbelts out fully to check for cuts or fraying. Ensure every belt clips securely into its buckle and retracts properly. The driver's seat must adjust forwards and backwards, and all doors must open from both inside and outside.
