Your vehicle's braking system is its most critical safety feature. Over time, brake pads and discs wear down due to friction and heat. Spotting the warning signs of brake wear early prevents accidents, ensures your vehicle passes its MOT, and avoids expensive damage to other brake components. Here are the 5 most common warning signs you should never ignore.
1. Squealing or Grinding Noise
A high-pitched squealing sound when you apply the brakes is a warning. Most brake pads feature a small metal wear indicator tab that scrapes against the disc when the pad material wears down to a critical level (about 2mm). If you hear a harsh metallic grinding sound, the pad material has worn away completely. The metal backing plate of the pad is now grinding directly against the brake disc, damaging the disc surface and severely reducing stopping power.
2. Spongy or Soft Brake Pedal
If your brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or sinks all the way to the floor when pressed, it indicates a problem with the hydraulic system. This is often caused by air or moisture contamination in the brake fluid, or a fluid leak from a caliper or brake line. Moisture lowers the boiling point of the fluid, causing brake fade. This requires immediate inspection and a brake fluid flush.
3. Pulling to One Side
If your car pulls to the left or right when you brake, it indicates uneven braking force. This is usually caused by a seized or sticking brake caliper piston. The sticky caliper applies constant pressure on one side, dragging the vehicle directionally and overheating the brake components. We service and rebuild calipers to ensure balanced braking.
4. Pedal Vibrations under Braking
A pulsating or vibrating sensation through the brake pedal (or steering wheel) under normal braking indicates warped brake discs. Warp occurs when extreme heat alters the metal structure of the discs, creating high and low spots. Warped discs must be replaced, as they reduce pad contact area and increase stopping distances.
5. Brake Warning Light On
If the red or amber brake warning light appears on your dashboard, your fluid level may be low, or your pads feature electronic wear sensors that have triggered. Check your fluid reservoir immediately, and book a brake inspection. At K66 Motors, we replace pads and discs using high-quality Brembo and Pagid components to ensure absolute safety on wet Scottish roads.
